January 8, 2009 ABATE D8 Monthly Meeting Minutes
Meeting called to order at 6:32 and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Cindy Garnand (2009 District Rep).
The new officers, Cindy Garnand (District Representative), Jim Tencza (Treasurer) and Rachelle Whitley (Secretary) were installed. Lance and Marilyn Dunagan will be removed from our bank account signature card and Cindy, Jim and Lou Cundiff (SW Regional Representative) will be added as new signatories for our account.
NOTE: Rachelle is moving to Santa Fe February 1st. She will be able to return to Durango to attend the February D8 monthly meeting to take minutes. She stated a new Secretary needs to be recruited, but suggested some alternatives for continuing to act as D8’s secretary from Santa Fe during the interim. Included in the discussion was use of a digital recorder and, if it’s clear enough, the digital file could be emailed to Rachelle for transcription. Rachelle also suggested that she could manage membership information updates, email notifications and phone tree reminders of meetings and events from Santa Fe.
Asst Rep Bob absent
Secretary’s report Last month’s minutes were unavailable due to a tech glitch with Cindy’s
Treasurer’s report presented by Jim.
Legislative
Lance absent due to recuperation from shoulder surgery.
A new leg. rep. needs to be recruited.
Jim suggested putting D8 in front of the state’s agenda by creating a PAC (political action committee) here in Durango, including all other motorcycle groups, such as Buell, Goldwingers, HOG, etc. If the PAC he wants to create could get State ABATE (and other sources) to contribute money, maybe a local PAC can be successful. PAC would not be an ABATE-only PAC, but ABATE would (hopefully) support it. Alvie suggested Jim obtain Mark Buckner’s contact info to pick his brain. Jim will also do some research, get an FEC filing number, file a registered agent with a name for the PAC. Miscellaneous discussion regarding details, limitations, challenges.
Road Captain’s report Page absent
SW Reg. Rep. report Terri emailed Lou and Cindy about the financial report for the Last Brass Monkey Run, which Lou reported on. The Run was profitable (surprising, given the change of event date).
Announcements

Unfinished Business
1/16/09 State Board Meeting. Jim, Lou, Cindy and Rachelle will be attending
Ignacio Bike Week All ABATE Campout: Get prices for Bob’s Johns. Baron asked if there would be an ABATE product and membership table. Lou responded that we would need volunteers to man it, however that was not successful last year. Baron suggested we could possibly find someone else’s table that would be willing to have some of our materials. Jim recommended cross marketing to the All ABATE Campout, including getting on the Rally website. Lou stated we should find out at the March State Board Meeting what the decision will be as to moving forward with the campout (depends on finances and State support). Additional discussion about how to still have a campout without State ABATE’s support by making it a D8 private party with invitations to other ABATE districts, and non-members would have to enroll in a district.
Ignacio Bike Week committee will be meeting Saturday, January 17th, at the Learning Center in Ignacio from 10a to 2p. Lunch will be provided. Vendors are already calling for spots.
New shirts Lou will get prices on the shirts then consult with a couple of members for input. We would need them by end of March. We have to order at least 48 shirts. Colors previously discussed include purple, black, charcoal.
1/24 @ 11am - Snowdown Parade: Chris H. has an idea for a chariot but needs some help at his place to put everything together and decorate. From Ignacio, take State Hwy.151 and go 6.2 miles to the Wild Horse Equestrian Center. You’ll see a marquee on the left and you’ll see a huge blue barn. If you have any problems getting there, call Chris at 883 2274.
Cindy asked about the status of the Thank You note that was discussed at last month’s meeting for all those who donated to D8 for Project Merry Christmas. Lou said it would be $125, with Jim and Baron donating $25 each toward the cost of the ad. Jim made a motion to place the ad, 2nd by Baron. All in favor. The ad will run this Monday if it gets called in tomorrow (Friday), which Lou will take care of. Cindy is checking into other publications that might give us reduced pricing for ads.
New Business Baron asked if the time for our monthly meeting could be changed to a later time. That option was disagreed upon for several reasons. Cindy suggested meeting on another day of the week. Alvie said that’s never been successful. Jim discussed that the average attention span is only one hour, so meetings shouldn’t run too much longer than that. It was once again suggested that we have our meetings on a day when we can then go for a ride. Further thought will be put into ideas that will make meetings more attractive to members.
Meeting adjourned at 7:45pm
R. Whitley, Secretary
