5/2/26
We’re getting down to the wire with only 11 days left in the Legislative Session. Here are the numbers to date: Senate – 189/20/11/4/7 and House – 430/44/28/21/23.
Last week we had SJR26-024 (Concerning the designation of May 2026 as "Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month") read in the Senate, but due to a heavy workload and not much time left, it probably won’t be read in the House.
As far as the bills I’ve been reporting on:
SB26-003 (Concerning expanding the scope of the "Battery Stewardship Act" to cover the end-of-life management of electric vehicle batteries) passed the S-APP Committee on Thursday but still has to pass two readings in the Senate and then work its way through the House.
SB26-035 (Concerning an increase of traffic violation penalties, and, in connection therewith, making an appropriation) was scheduled for a H-APP Committee hearing yesterday then needs to pass two readings in the House.
SB26-072 (Concerning increasing criminal penalties related to assaultive conduct with a motor vehicle, and, in connection therewith, adding the conduct of causing the death of another person with a motor vehicle to the crime of criminally negligent homicide) is stalled in the H-JUD Committee and hasn’t seen any action since Tuesday, 4/14.
The end of session is Wednesday, 5/13, and I’ll be heading to Bikers Inside the Beltway (it really is more than a one-day ride for me!). I usually report a thorough summary of the Legislative Session right after the end of session, but it might happen later when I return from DC.
Lastly, I got 6 confirmed appointments with Congressional offices for BITB and I’m waiting for 3 more replies from congressional aides. One office wouldn’t even accept my email or answer my phone call because I’m not a constituent, but I will drop off the MRF “Leave-Behind” pamphlet on Tuesday, 5/19. I’m anxious to get there and present our motorcycle issues and concerns to our Colorado Legislators with the Highway bill being discussed in the upcoming weeks.
